Aba Tuntun village, Ijebu-Igbo in the Ijebu – North Local Government Area of Ogun State was in very serious tumult when some villagers ambushed police officers, shot the Divisional Police Officer, and kidnapped four of his men.
It was gathered that the crisis erupted after a team of policemen demilitarised some criminals following a complaint by the village head that some unscrupulous elements were in possession of firearms.
It was further discovered that the Baale had petitioned the police earlier, complaining that some persons within his community were in possession of firearms, which they used to terrorize and steal from the innocent villagers.
After receiving the petition, the Nigerian Police, Ogun State Command swung into action on Thursday by conducting a raid with 15 officers and 35 local vigilantes.
According to reports, the raid was quite successful as six single-barreled guns, 16 Dane guns, and 16 cartridges were recovered from the criminals, who were apprehended by the men of the Nigerian Police Force.
Their members waylaid the security agents, launched attacks on them as they were vacating the community.
They were said to have fired gunshots at the police officers and attacked them with other dangerous weapons.
The DPO that led the team was reportedly shot in the arm while some others sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds.
A source in the village who pleaded anonymity told newsmen that 4 (four) officers and 3 (three) vigilantes were kidnapped by the criminals who equally made away with two AK-47 rifles, one pump action, one teargas, money, and other items belonging to the security agencies.
The source added that those hoodlums earlier nabbed by the police were discharged during the raid on security men while two vehicles belonging to the Nigerian Police were badly damaged by the criminals.
Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Police Command, on Saturday, confirmed the ugly incident.
The PPRO revealed that 3 (three) of the 4 (four) kidnapped corps have been rescued.
Oyeyemi added that Emmanuel Gene, a Police Constable, was still being held captive by the hoodlums.
He said the police had reinforced the area to ensure that the missing police constable will be rescued.
The PPRO disclosed that 3 (three) suspects have been apprehended and they are assisting the police in their investigation.
According to Oyeyemi,” The incident happened. The village head had petitioned the Police that some hoodlums are in possession of dangerous weapons in the village.
“The DPO led his team to the place with vigilantes and recovered Six single-barrel guns, 16 Dane guns, 16 cartridges and arrested the suspects.
“While taking the suspects and the weapons to the station some hoodlums ambushed them and abducted four policemen.
“They shot the DPO in the arm and freed the suspects.
“We have rescued three of the policemen abducted, we don’t know the whereabouts of the constable among them.
“We have arrested three suspects and they are helping us in the investigation,” she added.
