Robbers Murder Police Officer, Abduct 13 Others in Niger

Unidentified miscreants suspected to be bandits on Wednesday murdered a riot police officer and wounded another in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.

The policeman wounded is now in Minna General Hospital receiving treatment where he was rushed to after the event.

According to the source, THISDAY the riot police officer, who was on routine patrol around the Mariga town cattle market, was trapped by the hoodlums and in the shootout that ensued, the riot policeman whose identity is still unknown was maimed.

This development occurred about 12 hours after bandits abducted 7 (seven) persons in Shamuyanbu village in Kusherki District of Rafi Local Government Area of the Niger State.

Four kidnapped victims, who are women include Salamatu Hassan, Maryam Usman, Safiya Bagobiri, and Safiya Bagobiri.

Residents also enlisted names of the men abducted as Abdulkarim Musa, Yunusa Malam, and Kabiru Shamuyanbu.

The locals said the bandits rode on motorcycles and shot sporadically to instill fears in the villagers.

“They forced their victims on the motorcycles with the bandits riding and another behind the victims and sped away.

“They are yet to get to the relations of the victims,” the eyewitness said.

Every attempt to get official confirmation from ASP Wasiu Abiodun, the Niger State Police Command Spokesman, was not successful as his phone could not be reached and he was not in the office when he was checked.

Recall that robbers had raided Munya and Rafi Local Government Areas abducting about 25 persons last week.

A man simply identified as Jonathan, the cashier of Munya Local Government Area, and Malam Musa Alhassan, the Speaker of the Local Government legislative arm, were among those kidnapped, while in Rafi, one Salisu Buhari was murdered by the bandits.
