On January 23, 2021, the Caucasus Journalist Network and Timberwolf-Phoenix LLC will host a “Remembering Black January” event, that will recall the tragic events of the massacre in Azerbaijan which transpired January 19-20, 1990.
From January 19-20, 1990, pursuant to the state emergency from the imminent total collapse of the Soviet Union, more than 26,000 Soviet troops invaded Azerbaijan’s capital Baku. The troops rained gunfire into neighborhoods and streets, citing the Pacific Council. This was in direct response to the Azerbaijani uprising and fight for independence from the rapidly-dissolving union. Over a hundred men, women, and children lost their lives to these events. The wave of death did not discriminate between Muslims, Christians, or Jews, but rather it cut them all down. The regime saw no humanity in any of them.
The Soviets thought they had won that day. When the killing was quiet, the troops imposed a curfew, promising retaliation if it was violated. In direct opposition to Soviet regime control, approximately 1 million Azerbaijanis took to the streets of Baku to join in solidarity with one another for their dead. Together, as one Azerbaijan, the people of Baku shut down the streets for mourning for 40 straight days.
This has been seen by global political experts as a shift in the tide of Azerbaijan’s fight for independence. One year later, in 1991, Azerbaijan would finally reclaim its independence from the dying Soviet Union.
The event recallling the massacre of Azerbaijani citizens, the resilence and solidarity of the Azerbaijani people, and moving forward from that tragedy will be held three days after the anniversary of the massacre. Timberwolf-Phoenix LLC’s media vice president Irina Tsukerman will preside over the discussion. Participants include Dr. Leyla Rustamova, Dr. Frank Musmar, Mariya Khan-Khoyskaya, and Abol Bahadori.
The event will begin at 12pm EST (New York City), which is 21:00 Baku time. Join us live on Facebook: https://fb.me/e/2A7rCBbaD
