In major aggression against bandits who have for some time now been terrorizing Northwest part of Nigeria, parts of Niger State inclusive, the police over the weekend killed six of the bandits and wounded many others.
The successful police operation took place at Garkogo in Shiroro Local Government Area Council of the state last Saturday.
According to eyewitnesses, the gun duel, which lasted several hours, left many of the hoodlums injured, and the wounded bandits reportedly fled into the forest with bullet wounds abandoning their operational motorcycles.
The criminal elements were said to have shot and killed a villager before the police officers engaged them in the fierce gunfire at about 3:30 am on Saturday.
Residents who witnessed the incident said, the bandits had equally invaded Kuchi town in the Munya Local Government Area Council during which they set many houses on fire and also razed down some religious places of worship including the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church in the area.
Sources said the invaders on arriving at Kuchi town shot sporadically into the air to scare away the villagers and some church members who were cleaning the churches ahead of the Sunday services.
Reports have it that they gathered all the church property including chairs, musical instruments, generating sets in the middle of the building, sprayed them with petrol before setting them ablaze.
The hooligans were said to have waited behind to ensure that everything in the church was burnt to ashes before they continued to carry out similar carnages in other parts of the town.
The Senior District Secretary of the CSMC, Isa Kwachie, confirmed the unfortunate incident, adding that the case was also reported to the Divisional Police Station in the town.
As of the time of filing this report, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, has not reacted nor confirmed the bandits’ attack.
