The Katsina State Police Command on Saturday authenticated an attack on Government Science Secondary School (GSSS) Kankara, on Friday night by unidentified gunmen.
This is contained in a statement issued by SP Gambo Isah, the Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Katsina State Command, and made available to newsmen in the State Capital, Katsina.
“Yesterday, at about 9:40 p.m., bandits in their numbers, shooting sporadically with AK 47 rifles, attacked GSSS Kankara, Kankara Local Government Area,” the statement read.
“The policemen on duty also responded to the attack and engaged them in a gun duel which allowed the students to scale the fence of the school and ran for safety.
“The DPO Kankara, reinforced the policemen on duty with armored Personnel Carrier (APC) which forced the hoodlums to retreat into the forest,” said Isah.
The Police Spokesman said that the police command was working with other security agencies and the school management to ascertain if students were missing following the raid or not.
According to Isah, the PPRO, over 200 students scampering for their safety, who escaped into the town during the inferno, had on Saturday morning, returned to the school.
He disclosed that a Police Inspector sustained a bullet injury during the unfortunate attack and was rushed to the hospital where he is receiving treatment.
