Unidentified gunmen on Friday night invaded Obowo Divisional Police Headquarters, located at Umulowe autonomous community in Imo State, and killed two police officers on duty.
The criminals equally wounded three other policemen who attempted to resist them from gaining access into the Divisional Police Headquarters.
It was gathered that on Saturday the unfortunate incident caused serious anxiety among residents of the area.
This is even as security agents drafted from the command’s headquarters in Owerri, had taken over the territory.
A source revealed that the hooligans who operated in a vehicle met the fierce challenge from policemen who were on duty when they attempted to gain access into the police yard.
Not comfortable with the challenge posed by the security agents, the hoodlums opened fire at the officers, killing two police officers at the spot.
According to reports, one of the criminals was killed in the gun battle between them and the security agency.
“Two policemen died in the incident. Three were wounded. One of the hoodlums was also killed but they drove off with him. The policemen who were killed were the ones who repelled them. It was an unfortunate development,” said the source.
Orlando Ikeokwu, the Imo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed when contacted that two policemen lost their lives as a result of the gun duel with the attackers.
He also said that the three other police officers who were injured during the incident had been discharged from a local hospital where they were rushed and moved to a better hospital in the state capital where they would receive proper treatment.
The PPRO told our newsmen that the command had drafted cracked troops of detectives in that axis and had since started an investigation on the matter.
