Unidentified gunmen raided Odoro Ikpe Divisional Police Headquarters in Ini Local Government Area Council of Akwa Ibom State, killed five policemen on duty, a police Officer’s wife, and also set ablaze patrol vehicles on Saturday.
Sources from the South-South region’s state of Akwa Ibom said, the unidentified gunmen believed to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, stormed the police station about 2:45 am in a Sienna car and two buses.
A statement posted online purportedly issued from the office of the Chairman of Ini Local Government Area Council, Isreal Idaisin, indicated that some other policemen equally sustained severe bullet wounds during the attack.
According to the statement, Idaisin commended the youths of the Local Government for alerting security operatives which helped to reduce the number of casualties recorded in the raid.
“The gunmen who came in two buses and a Sienna car filled with armed men numbering more than 40, arrived Ini Local Government Area with sophisticated weapons, broke into the police facility at precisely 2:45 am, killed five policemen on duty, burnt vehicles, and inflicted injuries on others.
“Some police officers who attempted to repel the gunmen were overrun. I urge the good people of Ini LGA to stay calm as we are working with relevant security agencies and the Government of Akwa Ibom State to ensure that the situation is contained.
“Necessary modalities are being put in place to forestall a reoccurrence. There is no cause for fear as the culprits will be brought to book in no distant time,” the statement said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Odiko MacDon who confirmed the attack stated that he was already at the scene of the incident for an on-the-spot assessment of the level of damages done to the security organization.
“Yes, there was an attack at the Divisional Police headquarters, Odoro Ikpe in Ini Local Government Area. Six persons including five officers and a wife of an officer were killed. I am at the station as we speak”. he simply responded.
The recent attack in the state brings the total number of police officers slain within May alone to seven and nine from April 27, 2021, when the criminals resumed attacks on Police stations, commands, and duty posts, killing of the officers after the Joint Military Operations.
