Not fewer than 30 members of the local security network in Kotonkoro town of Mariga Local Government Area Council of Niger state have been killed in cold blood by bandits.
According to a reliable source, the ugly incident took place on Thursday morning.
The vigilante group members were reported to be heading to some bandits-affected areas in the Local Government when they were attacked and killed by the monstrous and raging bandit group.
It was gathered that a reinforcement sent to the Kotonkoro axis to rescue men of the vigilante group that were kidnapped equally ran into an ambush and were unfortunately killed the same way their colleagues were slaughtered.
According to a top government official who pleaded anonymity, “The casualty is very high.”
Reports also have it that a military post in the area was also raided by the bandits but it could not be confirmed if there was any casualty on the side of the security forces.
However, a source said a distress call was made to the Airforce which promptly deployed a helicopter to the area which engaged the bandits.
A source said, “The casualty is high on both sides, that is the much I can tell you.”
The Secretary to the State Government Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Matane when contacted confirmed the story saying that 20 vigilantes have been so far lost to the attack by the hoodlums.
Matane equally confirmed that the military post in the area was attacked and one soldier was lost in the battle.
“We lost one soldier,” said Matane.
