Fear grips residents of Calabar, the Cross River State Capital, following the discovery of the lifeless body of ACP Egbe Eko Edum, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, reportedly hacked to death by unknown assailants in Calabar, the State Capital, yesterday.

It was gathered that the terrifying incident occurred around 1:00 am by Pepsi depot, opposite WAEC office along Murtala Muhammed Highway in Calabar.

Investigations revealed that the Assistant Commissioner of Police serving in 73 PMF Squadron, Magumeri, Borno State, was slain to death with an ax by his assailants who abandoned him to die on the lonely highway.

Sources residing within the area said, “He has a house close to NTA Calabar along the highway. He alighted from a vehicle and was heading to his house when the hoodlums attacked him. You can imagine he had traveled from Borno only to be killed meters away from his house”.

DSP Irene Ugbo, Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that the deceased police officer came into Calabar to see his family, but he entered the city very late.

In her words, DSP Ugbo said, “He dropped off from public transport and had called his wife to pick him up before he was attacked by the unknown men. We are investigating the incident and the family has recovered the body from the scene of the tragic incident.

She reiterated that the deceased was an Assistant Commissioner of Police who served in Borno State but only came to Calabar on a visit.

“He is not serving here. I think he was coming to see his family in Cross River. He arrived in Calabar at about 1 am when the incident happened,” the PPRO added.
