No fewer than two persons have been reportedly murdered and others wounded by unidentified gunmen suspected to be cultists at Luubara Town in Khana Area Council of Rivers State.
It was gathered that unknown gunmen raided the community during a masquerade procession. Sporadical shooting commenced and as a result of that, bullets hit four persons, who were drinking in a nearby bar close to the scene of the incident.
According to reports, two of the victims passed away immediately, while the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Bori arrived and took the injured victims to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Nwibani Barry, a resident of the community, who confirmed the ugly incident, said, “We were having a masquerade dance on Tuesday night when gunmen invaded our community about 8:00 p.m. and started shooting. Their bullets hit two persons, who died on the spot, while others sustained injuries.”
He identified the late victims as Timothy Baridapdo and Bariyaa, adding that two ladies whose names are yet to be ascertained are in the hospital receiving treatment.
The eyewitness, who expressed total shock over the development, described Luubara as ‘a peaceful community’ wondering why the mayhem befell the peace-loving people.
However, Nwibani, pleaded with security agencies to help the community to restore peace, normalcy, and harmony.
Another source from the community revealed that the gunmen were members of a secret cult group in search of their rivals.
It was equally discovered that Timothy was an opprobrious gang leader, who had been indicted for several attacks in the town.
Nnamdi Omimi, the Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Police Command, when contacted, confirmed that the incident was a controversy between two rival cult groups in the area.
He said, “It was a cult clash between two rival groups leading to the death of Bariya Timothy, a notorious gang leader, whose gang has been responsible for the attacks in Lubara Community and its environs.
“No arrests have been made, but all hands are on deck to arrest members of the cult groups. The community is peaceful and the area under close monitoring.”
