Unknown gunmen ambushed a vehicle of the Nigerian Correctional Service conveying some inmates to court in Anambra, leaving two officials of the service dead on Friday.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the unfortunate incident took place at about 11:00 am around Ekwulobia in Aguata Local Government Area Council of Anambra state.
Yesterday’s incident happened barely 24 hours after some unknown gunmen attacked and killed some naval and police officers at three different security checkpoints in the state and carted away with their weapons.
For now, no one can state categorically clear whether the gunmen released the inmates in the bus or whether they took away the weapons of the NCS officials.
An eyewitness told the News Agency of Nigeria that some of the officers and inmates in the vehicle ran for their lives during the raid.
The Public Relations Officer for the Correctional Service in the state, Francis Ekechukwu, confirmed the attack. He said the service has launched an investigation into the incident.
The newly posted police spokesman in the state, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, said an investigation had begun with a view to arresting the criminals.
“It is very unfortunate, but police operatives swiftly responded and chased the hoodlums away. The investigation is ongoing to arrest the perpetrators of this act,” said DSP Tochukwu.
