Six armed robbers were killed in a gunfight with Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives attached to Akwa Ibom Command early on October 3.
The robbers were reportedly operating along the Itu/Calabar Highway before being confronted by the corps.
The Akwa Ibom State Command Commissioner of Police, CP Amiengheme Andrew, while displaying the robbers’ corpses at Ikot Akpan-Abia in Uyo on Friday, said they opened fire on the officers on sighting their Hilux van on approach.
The officers returned fire leading to the death of the six.
According to the CP, the command had received reports of the activities of a car snatching syndicate operating along the Itu/Calabar Highway and mobilised Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives who went after them.
The suspects were shot in the ensuing gunfight and rushed to the Police hospital in Uyo but were declared dead.
The CP said, three locally made pistols, 10 live cartridges, four expended cartridges, one pump action gun, one unregistered motorcycle, a military camouflage cap and a Toyota Camry car were recovered from the suspects.
CP Andrew warned criminals to vacate the State or face the law.
