No fewer than 20 terrorists have been killed and four of their camps were destroyed in a combined operation in two northern regions badly hit by Islamic extremists, the Burkina Faso military stated on Tuesday.
The statement revealed that the successful operation was carried out on May 5 in the Nord and Sahel regions of the country, joining together conventional and special forces, the air force and gendarmerie, a police unit that is under military command.
According to a senior military officer who pleaded anonymity, Named Houne — Dignity in the Fula, or Peul, language — the operation is expected to last more than one month.
“More than 20 terrorists have been neutralized” and four of their bases or positions have been destroyed, the source said, adding that the insurgent’s means of communication, weapons, ammunition, and transport had been seized as well.
The gallant armed forces have made many announcements of such similar operations in the past, but are failing to stem a mounting toll positioned by the Sahel country’s five-year-old Islamic extremism and violence.
About 1,300 people have been killed and more than a million persons have run away from their homes because of fear.
Three civilians were killed in Tin-Akoff, in the Nord region on Saturday, while three army officers were hurt by a highway bomb in Mansila in the province of Yagha in the Eastern region.
